Honestly, I don't think that we are the dumbest generation. I just think that we obtain knowledge to us that are more relevant to our future. Most schooling systems don't even require us to know the same events that were discussed during their years in school. Time has changed and so have the people. Nothing will ever be like it as in the past. We grow as a society and as a nation to better ourselves. If that was the case, we would still have the "barter" system and not currency; we would still be using a type writer instead of a computer or even a laptop! Times have changed, no we may not all agree on how they have changed, but we never use to before. People were always trying to find new ways to do things and to make our lives more efficient. That's just the way our system works. Yes we do have more gadgets (i.e. i-Pod’s, laptops, DVR, gaming systems, cell phones, etc) but that doesn't mean we know less. Yes we may not know the whole Constitution front to back, but I bet "my generation" could teach the world how to operate computers and mostly any technological advantages that we have in this world. We can find out any bit of information by hacking sites and just by even searching and knowing where to find out the most accurate information. We have this knowledge at our finger tips, only thing that we can't do is remember what we have found or rather regurgitate it to someone. Maybe some information we can remember if it interests us, but why should we actually retain information if we can get something else to retain it for us?
What I also do not understand is people of his generation use these things too. They use I-Pods, lap tops, Tivo, and more. What I don't understand is how were are the dumbest generation but clearly his generation uses these technologies too. I think he really needs to stop being bias and try to understand our generation.
ReplyDeleteI believe that somethings whether they interest us or not we should remember. Math doesn't interest me, but I should remember how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide even if I have to do it on paper. Now that seems like a given, knowing those things, but those are things we remember even if we would rather not knowing them.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I do agree with your "times are changing" comments, I find your question, "why should we atually retain information if we can get something else to retain it for us," somewhat frightening. Frightening because it is so insightful! I cannot help but wonder if we choose not to retain, how do we know if we truly comprehend?
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone's comments already. Bauerline's generation also uses the technology that he blames is causing our generation to be dumber. It's not a question of being lazy, but I think efficient; technology helps make our lives easier. But I also think that we shouldn't solely rely on technology to do everything for us or we'll end up like the people on WALL-E.
ReplyDeleteI agree that we use our resources to help our futures, and thats true that we are growing as a society by using all the technology we have made.
